Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act: Long Overdue

This workshop will cover the campaign to pass the Gender Expression Non Discrimination Act. This bill has been in the mix for eleven years, and the NYS Senate fails to bring it to the floor every year, this year included, with the legislative session coming to an end a few days ago. The difference between the first ten years and this last year is the aggressive, focused campaign on GENDA as the main LGBT initiative. The campaign this year, for the first time, included legislative strategy, media and outreach, a broad based coalition, paid lobbyists, public education and outreach and “boots on the ground” statewide, grassroots organizing from Buffalo to Montauk.  This panel will cover: how important all of these components are in a campaign for civil rights legislation; how each component dovetails with the others; critiques of the campaign; strategies; major players; how incredibly infuriating it is when, despite massive efforts on behalf of 80 individual, organizational and funding partners in a coalition, the NYS legislative process fails the people of New York; next steps and moving forward.
